Self-sustaining Biodiversity Conservation through Tribal Livelihoods in Arunachal Pradesh
Ramana Athreya, IISER Pune

Pilot Venture - Skilling & Livelihoods

Sustainable and ecofriendly local livelihoods are at the core of our strategy for getting tribal communities to take the lead in instituting conservation measures in Arunachal Pradesh.

Unfortunately, the area lags in education and many of the people have not completed high school.

Therefore, skilling programmes geared towards our activities have been a central part of the project effort.

Biodiversity Research Personnel
Biodiversity research in the area - for both ecotourism and globally competitive academic research - is being carried out by trained local youth for premier research institutions including IISER Pune, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Wildlife Institute of India (WII), etc.
They collect field data using rigorous methodologies and hand-hold PhD students as they gain field experience.

Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve Protection Squad
A team of ten Bugun youth have been constituted into a forest protection squad to ensure the integrity of the community reserve. They patrol the reserve and man the entry gate to stop illegal resource extraction including poaching.
This activity is being carried out in partnership with the Forest Department - the right image shows the team working with the Eaglenest Range Forest Officer. In fact, this team has more than doubled the personnel available to the Forest Department for the protection of Eaglenest. The community reserve forms the northern buffer for Eaglenest and hence protecting the reserve also protects Eaglenest.
