Self-sustaining Biodiversity Conservation through Tribal Livelihoods in Arunachal Pradesh
Ramana Athreya, IISER Pune

Pilot Venture - Nature Education & Outreach

School Children, Community Outreach and Trainee Forest Officers
The pilot focussed on demonstrating that biodiversity conservation can yield local economic benefits.

However, nature education was always envisaged as crucial for promoting biodiversity conservation

On being convinced of the benefits of conservation the Bugun and other tribal communities of the area, with the help of the Forest Department, have regularly undertaken outreach and education programmes.

The enthusiasm in the area for nature education and outreach and the success they have achieved is a major positive for the entire exercise and stands testimony to the original strategy that economic benefits of conservation would lead to multiple spin-offs.

The biodiversity database, especially images, contributed by researchers working in the area and the success of the community-conservation project has fostered an active outreach programme.

This programme caters to school children and teachers, local community members and trainee forest officers for whom a trip to the Bugun community forest has become a regular feature.

At the heart of this exercise is an excellent Nature Interpretation Centre designed and set up by the Forest Department.

The attractive and informative audio-visual displays in Centre is an excellent resource for education and can even be a stand-alone attraction for tourists.
