Prof. Mukul Kabir

Mukul Kabir is a Professor in the Department of Physics at IISER Pune. He obtained his Ph.D. in computational condensed matter physics in 2006 from the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, and continued as a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2006–2011. He received the Ramanujan Fellowship and joined the Physics department at IISER Pune in 2012.

Our Approach: Modeling Quantum Materials

Quantum many-body interactions among electrons, orbitals, spins, and crystal lattices—coupled with topology and reduced dimensionality—often give rise to exotic states of matter. We are a computational condensed matter physics group dedicated to understanding, predicting, and leveraging these intrinsic and emergent quantum phenomena to pave the way for disruptive technologies.

Combining state-of-the-art first-principles quantum theories with model Hamiltonian and simulation approaches, we investigate the intricate interplay among strong correlations, spin-orbit coupling, quantum fluctuations, topology, and reduced dimensionality. Our research focuses on a diverse range of systems, including 2D materials, correlated oxides, and topological phases.

Close collaboration with experimental groups is core to our philosophy, driving many of our published work and bridging computational physics with real-world discoveries.
