Synergising Biodiversity Research, Tribal Livelihoods and
Self-sustaining Conservation in Arunachal Pradesh

The Eaglenest Story: Past and Future

Ramana Athreya, IISER Pune

Arunachal Biodiversity Conservancy

We propose to scale up a tribal-livelihood generation programme to motivate the Bugun and Shergaon tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh to conserve a remarkable suite of globally treasured biodiversity in their backyard in Eaglenest wildlife sanctuary and surrounding forests.

This programme will utilise high quality biodiversity research to add value to the tribal livelihoods through ecotourism and also provide inputs to conservation measures.

We have already implemented a proof-of-concept venture which has run in a financially self-sustained manner starting 2006.

We plan to implement a scaled up version which will
  • increase the number of beneficiaries twenty-fold, and
  • generate sufficient revenue to sustain local conservation activities

This unique feature in which Conservation-sustains-Livelihoods-sustains-Conservation may well prove to be a paradigmatic change for conservation models in the country.
