MothSph_Rhagastis_castor_F1_0_SE0210N.jpg | http://tpittaway.tripod.com (Sphingidae of the Eastern Palaearctic) |
Identification:
3 linear series of outer discal black spots. The outer discal
background consists of two large, pale subterminal patches, one sub-apical and
the other extending down to the dorsum. The marginal area is darker and has an
irregular outline. We have 3 colour forms : (i) castor1: a pale bright brown
form with smaller discal series spots (ii) castor2: a darker form with larger
spots in the discal series (iii) castor3: an even darker form.
Not sure of the identification - castor2 and castor3 may well be R. confusa.
One can see the pinkish hair-tuft on tegula in many of them, but they all have
pale post-discal patches like R. castor. The other group that we have listed
under confusa do not have these pale patches.
