Science Popularization and Public Outreach Committee was established in TIFR in 2003. Rajeev Bhalerao had been a Member of this Committee since its inception, the Chairperson during October 2005 - April 2009, and Co-Chairperson during May 2009 - June 2016.

One of the most important activities of this Committee is the organization of the Frontiers of Science: Open House for standard X students, their parents, and teachers. It involves organizing a visit to TIFR of several hundred invited participants from many schools in and around Mumbai (about 1500 persons from 80 schools in 2014), with a full-day’s program of lectures, audio-visuals, lab visits, demonstrations of science experiments, etc. The proposal to organize such a program was made by him in 2002 and this program has been organized every year since 2003. As a part of this program, several booklets were produced for free distribution among the invitees: (a) Famous Indian Scientists, (b) Research Establishments in India, (c) A Revolution in Physics: Einstein’s Discoveries of 1905 Made Simple, (d) Inside TIFR Laboratories, etc.

The Committee has also been holding Cafe Scientifique - like sessions called Chai and Why at the Prithvi Theatre, Juhu, first Sunday of every month, and at the Ruparel College, Matunga, third Sunday of every month. As a part of this continuing program, he made a presentation entitled The Big Bang and the Little Bang, at the Prithvi Theatre, Juhu, Mumbai, on 4 October 2009.

As a part of the Homi Bhabha Birth Centenary celebrations (2008-2010), the Outreach Committee organized a monthly Public Lecture Series by TIFR scientists, over the period of two years, at various venues throughout Mumbai.
